This week I can’t stop thinking about seasonality and how much we are creatures of habit. Almost to the day, the changing seasons prompt me, every year to drag the autumn/winter clothes out of the loft. I reach for the thicker, brushed cotton duvet cover and start regretting my decision to not book a chimney sweep back in July.
Reading the latest newsletter from
- of Tarot from the Moon Shed - she talks about the changing light levels at this time of year and how it acts as a trigger on the deepest, most primitive parts of our brain. It prompts us to take action in anticipation of the cold weather to come. And it’s something that often we are completely unaware of.We act in synchronicity with the seasons whether we are aware of it or not. Whether we have a sudden urge to make a blackberry crumble or insist on wearing the winter boots even though it’s still 22 degrees outside.
Synchronicity popped up again this week with a recent knit of mine. I acquired some gorgeous Brimham HT from Eden Cottage Yarns a while ago and knew that I wanted to use it to reknit an older sock pattern of mine.
The Samhain socks were knit back in the day when my photography wasn’t great and I didn’t understand that some yarn colours - no matter how beautiful in person - just don’t show cables and stitch definition well on camera. So a reknit was on the card.
I decided to take part in the Strictly Sockalong 2023 - info here - not that I ever need an excuse to tune in for a bit of dance-themed escapism. And happily, I knit them up really quickly. Turns out that a twisty bit of cabling is the perfect thing to calm an anxious brain worrying about her son’s first week flying solo at Uni.
Anyway, back to serendipity. I went to update the pattern information in my records and found that I had first released the Samhain Sock pattern almost exactly 10 years ago - in October 2013. No wonder I couldn’t find a record of them on Instagram - did it even exist then?
Just to repeat - 10 years ago - where did that time even go? My eldest son was 8 when I last knit those socks.
If anyone wants me I’m going to be lying down in a darkened room until I quietly digest that little snippet.

Oh, FFS. Guess who hit publish rather than schedule.
Ah well, please enjoy the Friday catch up 12 hrs early.
It must be Friday already - somewhere?
Thanks Louise. Kind as always in sharing. It's Friday in Australia perhaps?
