It was March 2023 when I finally decided to take the plunge and start writing here on Substack. I’ve been blogging for years, since the days of Google Reader (and I’m still mad that’s gone). Something about Substack reminded me of those fun blogging days where we would all hop from blog roll to blog roll, leaving little comments and generally interacting with each others work.
Being able to easily leave comments without remembering a pesky Wordpress password, or even more delightfully being able to interact with others who are also leaving comments is what really sold Substack to me.
I might be an introvert, but from the safety of my online cave I love nothing better than a cosy half hour with my coffee and my conversations with online pals. Substack provides that in spades and that’s why over the course of the past year it’s become by far my favourite place to hang out.
One of the great things about Substack is the fact that it’s relatively new and that there are no rules - and that’s also one of the most terrifying things.
The fact that there is no rule book to follow is simultaneously freeing and also paralysing if, like me, you are a chronic overthinker.
It’s very easy to get stuck in a cycle of endless procrastination and self doubt but all thanks to
and others for the advice that sometimes you just need to start and refine as you go. And I’m so pleased I did.One year on and I have 128 published posts (some shorter than others), I have a full draft folder and a semi-regular rhythm of publishing. Had I listened to that pesky inner voice back in March 2023 I would probably have 200 draft posts and very little else to show for all my hard work.
Friday has always been my newsletter day so I have tried to stick religiously to that, and I also offer a short Monday post just for paid subscribers. I normally try to post again during the week but this is a little more sporadic. I would much rather write when I feel I have something to say, something authentic from the heart, rather than writing because the timetable requires it.

Some genuinely lovely feedback I’ve had - I love how easy Substack makes it to leave little feedback snippets for your favourite ‘stackers:
I’ve been thrilled and delighted at how many people have joined my Everyday Knitter community on Substack this year and I’m grateful for each and every one.
If you’d like to join me for another year of knitterly shenanigans please just tap the button below to find out more - you’d be really very welcome.
I’m new here and I so enjoy your posts!
Happy Substack birthday, Louise! I'm here because you made it sound so good! Thank you for the inspiration and I'm so happy that you have a thriving community here.
