Substack friends - this one’s for you.
We all know how fabulous Substack is, we are here most days after all. But there are so many of our fabulous followers still struggling with traditional social media. They are loathing the algorithm, hating the fact that they can’t see updates from people they know and generally contemplating giving up social media altogether in frustration.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could tempt them across to Substack instead? To the wonderful, warm and welcoming place that we know it to be.
I’ve seen some fabulous conversations around this recently.
of the Gather & Grow Substack issued a call to action last week. Asking people to try to spread the Substack word and after reading that conversation I decided to go ahead and write a blog post singing Substack’s praises. If they’ve even heard of Substack at all, many people have the impression that it’s just for writers, for authors, not for people ‘like them'. But really, without readers we wouldn’t have a platform at all.
Trying to present Substack as a place for readers first and foremost is a challenge for all of us and it’s all something that we can all take action on - just be chatting about it in our ordinary, everyday, online lives.
Admittedly the likes of Twitter have made it more difficult with alleged bans on the Substack URL or even on the use of the world, but however much Musk tries to think so, Twitter isn’t the centre of the online world. We can chat to people about Substack in so many ways and in so many places.
Following the example of others I have decided to make better use of my Pinterest platform to showcase my Substack work and I’ll be revamping my website to mention it more as well. Putting it front and centre, as it were, rather than whispering about it from the sidelines.
If you’d like to read my blog post on the subject, you can find it here:
And so, I’ll end this post with a challenge - what’s one thing you can do to promote Substack this week?
We have a (6-year old) newsletter 'in another place' (yep, I'm one of those cowardly custards who worry about changing something that works which is why it isn't over here - also, the formatting is good where it is) and I have increased the number of shares to that written over on Substack. I am pretty sure a number of our subscribers have signed up as readers (even my 80-year-old mum!). I'll push it some more. Great post
