I put most of my handcream on the back of my hands too, they're the driest and the bits on show the most. Never thought there was any other way to do it! I think you and I are completely 100% right on this and the rest of the internet is wrong 😂

I love all your photos, especially when you show your hands knitting or holding a cup. 💜 I’m nearing 42. Definitely feeling some ageism. Also, that strange phenomenon has occurred where everyone in public suddenly seems significantly younger than me. It’s very different. As for IG… Maybe block the rude and creepy commenters?? ☺️ there are so many bots and weirdos on IG I now give zero cares blocking accounts 😅

It’s funny you should say that, I was on a train the other week in London and I had the exact same experience.

I looked around and realised I was probably the oldest person in the carriage - by quite some margin.

Thank you for reminding me all the successes my hands bring to my life, no matter what they look like after 75 years

Whenever I look down at my sixty-year old hands knitting I see my Grandmother’s hands. She taught me to knit when I was eight. It’s like she’s still here with me, watching me make the same mistakes I did as a kid 😂 Let’s hear for hands that have seen some stuff!

When I hear of or see a rude comment like that, I often think how ugly inside a person has to be to post something like that. It's truly sad, and they were definitely the minority based on the outpouring of support you received. That was good to see. Poop on them.

Thank you for this, Louise. At 66, I am very aware of the spots and scars that mark my hands. Whenever I need to show my hands in photos (especially in close-ups), I have to fight the desire to use Photoshop to make them look less experienced than they really are.

I often look around and realize I'm the oldest person in the room. I'm getting better at deciding that doesn't matter a bit.

Exactly this. Ageing is a privilege and I intend to keep on doing it for as long as possible.

Your hands look great, says the 72 year old with popping blue veins, knobby arthritic finger joints and wrinkles galore.

I saw this all unfolding on social media. I can’t believe the audacity of some folk who are so mean on social media.

I love what you have written about the evolution of human hands and how we use them. What fascinates me is how our hands memorise things through movement that we can't name or repeat with our minds. Like typing, Im a fast typist, I imagine its the same for knitting. I can't visually tell you from left to right the letters on a keyboard yet my hands know where to go. I have also been able to braind my hair both ways (under and over) since I was abotu 10, I can still do it now in my 40s even though I haven't done it in many many years. My hands remember exactly what to do in what order. It really is fascinating... and being multilingual, my clever hands can also type fast in mutliple languages! We need to give ourselves more credit for all that we know how to do, the modern world of online platforms and marketing will always remind us of the opposite.

I loved most of this post. (I believe God created me, so didn;t appreciate the lengthy explanation (?) re: evolution). I remember years ago accompanying my husband to meet a very rich man for lunch. He had been unfaithful to his wife, so when he made a comment about how he could always tell how old a woman was by looking at her hands, I took note. Until then I had never noticed my hands or how they were aging. It's one of those comments you never forget.
