I am a Meditative Knitter. That means I don’t design things. I don’t really finish things (mainly socks and dishcloths). I haven’t yet found sweater success.

I am also a Teacher (high school Spanish) and a reader.

There’s a lot to be said for being a meditative knitter - sometimes the process is enough, regardless of the actual product.

I have a basket full of unfinished projects. This lovely spot might help me grab something to sit. I love the meditative quality of handwork projects.

A lovely welcome to your community! I started my maker life a few years after a stem cell transplant for leukemia 21 years ago. No longer having the energy to work, I found a fantastic huge online crafting community where I learned to make art, knit, felt you name it I bought the supplies (turns out that is my real talent haha) and taught myself everything with the support of the many friends I made. I knit in the winter, which is long in northern Canada and when I travel. Mostly hats, shawls, scarves. Every year I aspire to the sock, hasn't happened yet. My Craftster community was shut down just before covid and I've been adrift since then so happy to find this hopefully new creative home!

I am a knitter, quilter, reader, who is currently rarely able to do any of those. I am receiving chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer (caught early 🤞) and it is a rare day lately that I have the energy to do any of the things I love. I will get through this and regain strength. Until then I follow others wip. Peace marla landt

Hi. I just re-read this post and how I love your statement, "Substack is the gathering in the kitchen. It’s where the real chat is, where people talk about what matters to them, about what they hold dear, about what gets them out of bed in a morning."

Now, after several months of being here I have found it to be true! Thank You!

Hi! I love hearing your voice. Thank you for sharing a bit of your story. I was introduced years ago to knitting by a friend of mine. We would gather as our kiddos played and knitted. She was an accomplished knitter and could tackle a variety of patterns. I never was able to pay enough attention as my kiddos were distracting. So, dish clothes and scarves were my go-to. One Christmas I managed to knit everyone hats for presents. My knitting practice has ebbed and flowed over the years, but I am in a rut. I bought a lovely yarn "Frida" to knit a poncho. This might be the place to support me as I take up the needles again. It would help me settle my mind and sit still! Thank you for this space!

Oh how fabulous. I'm so pleased we found each other here. Knitting is such an amazing hobby - I had a gap of many years between learning as a child and then picking it up again in my 30s. After a few false starts and dropped stitches I was away. Thank goodness for the internet 🤣 If you need any help or suggestions for getting going please just shout

I echo what Hannah says, it was lovely to hear you Louise. I can understand that making the recording would be nerve wracking but if it’s any consolation you didn’t sound nervous. I see that you have a scientific background and wonder whether I’m imagining that there seem to be a high incidence of scientific/mathematical ability amongst knitting and crochet designers?

I think there's a definite attraction for us sciency folk. Something about the numbers and the order of things perhaps?

That's a good point, that's definitely part of the attraction.

Hi. I've been knitting for over 50 years. My mum taught me this craft and sewing before I started school. My knitting goes everywhere with me except when I go shopping. I have a dog who I have a really close relationship with. He will use me as a climbing frame, sit on my shoulders, everything. I love coffee and books too. Although I'm English I do not like tea

Hi Sue, lovely to meet you. Have to confess that I'm not a big tea drinker either - coffee all the way for me ☕

I used to work in banking until the stress of the hard sell got to me. I couldn't justify what the bank wanted me to do to ordinary people. So I walked before I was pushed. I miss the income but not the pressure. Now I'm doing what I love - knitting and sewing mainly for children

Hi, I'm Caroline, from Adelaide in South Australia. I am a handspinner and sometimes weaver who does not like knitting ( I learnt very young and have hated it ever since!) but happily help my friends interpret their knitting patterns. I mainly create art yarns, but do also do yardage, enough for a reasonable sized project, but not enough for a jumper or cardi, as I get irresistible urges to get feral with what I do. I have one anti-social cat, and an American Staffy who luckily does not chew my wheels. I also spin with drop spindles, and they have a habit of multiplying in the dark, like coat hangers. I collect drop spindles simply because they take up less room than spinning wheels.

Hi Caroline. How easy is it to learn to use drop spindles? I once made the mistake of buying unspun wool off the good old internet but haven't had the courage to try and spin it yet

This is the warmest introduction to a newsletter I ever experienced, thank you!!!

I started knitting only two years ago and am still a very slow knitter (so far, I finnished two scarfs and 1,5 socks). The Everday Knitter is the first blog/newsletter I found that doesn't (unintendedly) put pressure on me by presenting too many results. I am looking forward to learining from your experiences in knitting and life.
