If you had to pack super light for a trip and could only take 1 needle/yarn combo what would it be?
For me it would be a 60cm 4mm circular needle and a 100g skein of sock (fingering weight) yarn. Unless I was allowed a sock needle as well though.
This is such a versatile combination for me and the sweet spot between tiny needles (finger cramps) and chunky needles which just make my hands/shoulders ache after a while.
The possibilities are endless, especially for travel knitting and I do love an asymmetric garter stitch shawl such as:
The Hitchhiker shawl (Ravelry link)
And this blog post has all the basics you need to knit your own.

At the moment I’m carrying some very fine yak/silk and 2mm needles. Takes up almost no space/weight and is absorbing because I haven’t used such a delicate combo before
For a long while, an H or J hook was my go to. I loved the feel of Caron's Simply Soft (still do) and Lion Brand's Homespun yarn. I know a lot of people don't like the Homespun, but I guess I'm an anomaly in that I love it. Then, I put my hook and yarn down for a long time.
I'm finally returning to it with the intention of learning to create beautiful things. I still love my bigger hook, but I think I'm learning to love my F hook now. I using an E for my current project and I just don't like how it feels in my hand. But I'm committed to the project now with it.
As for yarn, I learning again what ones I love.
