I was pulling on this very pair of socks the other morning and marvelling at the fact they are still going strong. And then I started trying to work out how long ago it was that I knitted them.
The indie dyer that produced them is sadly no longer in business - this is the amazing Britsock from the very talented and much missed Knitting Goddess.
They must easily be over 10 years old and show very little sign of giving up any time soon. For those that were lucky enough to use it Britsock really was a fantastic workhorse sock yarn - a blend of BFL, alpaca and nylon that was wonderful to work with.
For those who are fond of asking why on earth we knit socks when you can buy them so cheaply, this might go somewhere towards answering that. I’ve yet to come across a commercial sock that can survive more than a year or so of rigorous use.
So, what’s your oldest handknit do you think?
I’ve done a little poll and I’d love to know - I’m nosy like that. And do jump into the comments too - would be lovely to have a chat about our oldest and most loved knits.
My husband still has a sweater I made him while we were dating…and we have been married for 48 years. I also still have a fisherman knit pattern afghan I made us in 1976.
I have the very first knit I ever made, when we were taught knitting in school in Ceylon in 1967. I was nine, and remember going to a department store in Colombo, to select my choice of colours - Royal Blue with pink for contrast stripes at each end. It's slightly moth-eaten, but I'll never throw it away.
