In the US Christmas starts in September, honestly; as soon as Starbucks releases the pumpkin spice latte, everyone goes insane. It's all they can do to not play Christmas music in the stores until after Halloween. We keep a slow and simple holiday season at our house, and it is very good for our bodies and souls.
It's pretty similar here in the UK o be honest. As you say, it's only Halloween that holds everything in check otherwise it would be full on Christmas in September
I have a friend who used to work for a large supermarket on the checkouts. Every year she would be sickened by the panic shopping going on, trollies piled high with food (sometimes two or three for one family) and wonder why people did this to themselves. The supermarket would be shut for two days, and how much of that food would be binned?
I worked at Sainsbury's for a few Christmas's as a student. One of my jobs was having to round up the discarded trolleys (and produce) - people would get halfway round and simply abandon their trolley and leave it out was too busy. Anything chilled or frozen had to be thrown out 🤦 The waste was horrific
It is one day, for which 90%+ of the labor is loaded onto women. I mostly opt out. 🤷🏻♀️
Absolutely. The mental load is just ridiculous. Like you, I opt out of as much as I can, and every year I find something else I can scale back on.
